Internships

DCM values educational opportunities for its clients, volunteers, and the wider community. DCM engages in several experiential learning partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to earn academic credit while working in DCM programs. Although DCM partners with student interns and colleges from around the country, it has ongoing relationships with the following educational institutions.

Emory University’s Candler School of Theology

DCM is one of several sites where first-year seminary students participating in contextual education serve throughout the school year. Students develop skills in communicating with and serving families in crisis in a non-evangelical, compassionate fashion. They also read assigned texts and reflect on how their weekly experiences at DCM relate to their readings and studies.

Emory University’s Woodruff School of Nursing

Nursing students participating in selected classes serve at Hagar’s House on a regular basis during the spring semester, offering health screenings and education, stress management techniques, and shelter improvement projects.

Agnes Scott College Department of Religion and Social Justice

Students participating in selected classes can elect to work in DCM programs for one semester as part of their class requirements. Student interns work at least two hours per week, spend one night in the shelter, and write regular journal entries and reflection papers about their experiences at DCM.

If you are not participating in one of the partnerships described above but are interested in doing an internship at DCM, please contact Beth Vann, Executive Director, at 404.377.5365, extension 8, or e-mail beth at decaturcooperativeministry.org.
