VOLUNTEER

VOLUNTEER

Our volunteers are compassionate and caring individuals who dedicate their free time to:

Helping homeless children be kids

Volunteers offer childcare, homework help, tech help, craft time and more to the children residing in Hagar’s House.

By spending quality time with the children of Hagar’s House, volunteers help provide a “normal” childhood in a setting that is often anything but. Having someone to watch their children also gives parents the opportunity to partake in important activities like employment assistance and financial
management courses.

These volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Thursday nights after 5PM and Saturday
mornings from 9:30 – 11:00 AM.

Helping homeless families regain stability

Volunteers can mentor families or offer resume help, job search help, and financial management skills to parents enrolled in DCM programs.

These services help families develop the skills they need to regain and maintain housing stability.

Mentoring services are provided to families enrolled in Family House, DCM’s transitional housing program. Volunteers must make at least a six-month commitment to mentoring a child, youth, parent, or family in the program.

Volunteers can also help parents create resumes, search for employment, or find housing in our on-site Tech Center. Volunteers are also needed to help clients expand their technological capacity. These opportunities are available Thursdays from 7:00–8:00 PM and Saturdays from 9:30–11:30 AM.

Volunteers facilitate DCM’s financial management course. This 3-part class offers homeless and at-risk families basic financial management skills and one-on- one budgeting sessions. Extensive training is provided for this role. Financial management courses are offered one week each month, Tuesday-Thursday, at two times: 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

Serving homeless families delicious meals

Volunteers provide dinner to the residents of Hagar’s House 365 days each year.

Dinner volunteers are responsible for purchasing, preparing, serving, and cleaning up after dinner on their chosen night(s). Dinner volunteer hours are from 6:00–8:00 PM daily, year-round.

A lead volunteer helps oversee dinner each night. This individual is responsible for the oversight of dinner volunteers, entering nightly guest information into a logbook, and assisting shelter staff with other tasks as needed. This opportunity is available for any evening year-round from 5:45–8:00 PM.

Helping around DCM’s offices

DCM is always in need of a little extra help around the office!

Office volunteers help answer the phone, greet visitors, retrieve voicemails, enter data, and sort in-kind donations.

Office volunteers generally work a 4 hour shift Monday-Friday between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Providing single-day group service projects

DCM has a multitude of possibilities for single-day group service projects!

In the past, groups have offered assistance in the maintenance of DCM’s properties by painting, performing yardwork, and the like.

Groups have also provided relaxing activities—such as facials and hair styling—to parents residing in Hagar’s House.

If you’ve got a group looking to do some good, let us know. We’re sure we’ve got something for you!

Using their professional skills to advance DCM

If you have a professional skill or a hobby that you’re itching to put to use for a good cause we’d love to hear from you!

Past volunteers have helped us devise social media strategies, plan events, photograph special events, win grants, and write copy for release to local papers.
